My bicycle chain came off and I tried to fix it myself but gave up.

My bicycle chain came off. I haven't experienced a bicycle chain coming off in many years, maybe since I was a child.

Since it takes nearly 20 minutes to walk to the bicycle shop, I looked into the possibility of actually fixing it easily by myself and found a video on how to fix it.

自転車チェーンが外れた時の直し方【コメリHowtoなび】 - YouTube

procedure

  1. Fit the chain in the back gear.
  2. Hook the chain under the front gear.
  3. Turn the pedal in the opposite direction

The video said that this was the only way to get the chain stuck and fixed. It was something of a life hack and I tried it, having heard good things about it.

challenge

Fit the chain in the back gear.

The bicycle had the chain in the back gear disconnected and the pedals were spinning.

In order to fit the chain to the back gear, I first removed the chain from the front gear that had not come off.

The situation worsened as the chain came off completely and dallied, but we managed to fit the chain into the back gear.

Hook the chain under the front gear.

I had no problems.

Turn the pedal in the opposite direction

It doesn't turn....

If you try to force the chain to turn, it will get more and more tangled, like a pile-up....

The bicycle has a narrow gap between the chain path and the cover to prevent the chain from coming off, and guides are installed in places, which in turn make it difficult to fit the chain.

I forgot that a chain is a chain and not flexible like a rope.... It is narrow and not flexible, so it doesn't work the way you imagine it should.... And because of its weight, it is always trying to fall down, making it difficult to handle.

Conclusion.

I thought about removing the chain cover and working on it, but I didn't want to go that far to fix it in the first place, and there was a possibility that I wouldn't be able to fix it even if I removed it, so I decided to have a bicycle shop fix it.

I watched the work thinking that a bicycle shop would be able to fit it in one shot, but after struggling with it for more than 10 minutes, I was glad to give up and realized that it was not easy even for a bicycle shop.

By the way, the fee was 1,000 yen.
